The 2nd Annual International City Swap
October 21, 2007
Hard to believe a year has already gone by, but it’s time again to host the Great International City Swap! So all of you who didn’t make it in last time, here’s your chance.
What we do is we swap cities/towns. You put together a package that you think best represents the place where you live, and what you love about it. Or, if you think where you live is ridiculous, you can put in the silliest things you can find. It’s up to your own creativity. Last year we had some really lovely packages circulating: from Detroit to Alaska, NYC to Rome, Jordan, NY to Turin, Italy, San Jose, CA to Australia, and Atlanta, Georgia to Rome (I still haven’t managed to cook grits 101 different ways yet!). Many others participated as well…in fact, you don’t have to have a blog to participate, just an email address and the willingness to put together and mail a package.
Here’s how it works:
What: Swap something(s) that, in your opinion, best represent the place where you live, and what you think makes it unique. It can be anything from handmade to store-bought, mugs to magnets, framed photos to local food items and handicrafts to postcards and local candy…just use your creativity!
How: To join the swap, leave a comment on this post. Please indicate if you do not wish to send internationally.
When: The deadline to join in the swap is Sunday, November 4. I’ll post the list of swap buddies on Monday, November 5. Then you can get in touch with the person you’ll be sending to, to see if they have any special likes/dislikes, etc. and perhaps personalize their package a bit. You’ll have two weeks to put your package together: the packages will need to go out by Monday, November 19.
Cost: Last year I set a price range of minimum $10 USD to maximum $20 USD, but this year I don’t want to necessarily set a price range. With international currencies at different values, I’d feel better not constraining people to a set range. Use your own judgement regarding how much to spend, but I’d say a minimum of $10 is probably a good idea, just so that no one gets short-changed.
If you’d like to add a participant button to your sidebar, you can grab this one, and link it back to this post:

Hope to see many of you on board… last year I sent out lots of fun goodies from Rome, I think there might have even been a wallet-sized card of the Pope in there…

I’m in this year…I so regretted not participating in the first swap. Mailing internationally can be a challenge for the recipient (la maladetta dugana). But if you need another international hook up, I’m in for that also…Thanks for organizing this again :-). Brain is already in motion…By the way, I’m in Shirley, NY, on BEAUTIFUL Long Island.

Ooooh, why not? I’m in Rome, New York!
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:04 am
I wish I could - but I’m completely consumed by prepping for our trip to Milan next month (which would get in the way of the shipping date anyway). Perhaps next year? Portland, Oregon needs to be represented someday.

This sounds fun! I’m in.
We’re spending this sabbatical year in New Hampshire, so that’s the place I’ll be representing.
Don’t know if this is mentioned elsewhere: Is there a price range we should be aiming for/not surpassing?
I can do international.
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:11 am
Count me in as well, sounds fun! (Louisville, KY)
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:27 am
Imperatrix: Good question about the price range; I’ve updated the post. I think a $10 USD minimum is a good guideline just so everyone gets at least a basic equal “amount” and no one gets shortchanged, but I’ll let everyone use their own best judgement.
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Count me in from Budapest, Hungary! International is fine. Thanks for organizing this; sounds like fun!
October 25th, 2007 at 5:04 am
Hey there,
Count me in as well - I live in Lexington, KY - the horse capital of the world! You might find it ironic that I’m not much of a horse person, but I’m more than happy to find some horse memorabilia if my swap buddy is so inclined. Thanks and take care
